Choosing a Contractor
- Hire only licensed contractors. Unlicensed contractors can expose you to financial hardships if mistakes are made
- Verify the contractor’s insurance. A contractor that does not have insurance defers all liability to the homewoner
- Check the contractor’s status and use state verification records to check currency (www.michigan.gov)
- Beware of the lowest bid as it may mean they have underestimated the project or are using poor quality materials
- Avoid paying large sums in advance as contractors who require large deposits
may not have your best interest in mind
- Be very cautious of credit or financing arranged by the contractor. Check first with a local lender you can trust
